Welcome to Small Talk.
No, I haven't cornered you at the water cooler. Neither of us want that. This is Small Talk, a production company based in Lincoln and working nationally.
I set up Small Talk as a vehicle for my own writing and as a way to collaborate with brilliant artists and communities on ambitious new work.
I’ve spent over ten years working across theatre as a marketer, programmer and producer, supporting other people’s work for organisations including The Lowry, Oldham Coliseum Theatre, Theatre By The Lake, The Dukes Lancaster and Silent Uproar. Alongside this, I work as General Manager for Everyone Here, the UK’s first long-term, citizens-led arts organisation, where building structures that genuinely connect artists, audiences and place sits at the heart of the job.
In 2024 and 2025, I produced Steel by Lee Mattinson for Theatre By The Lake, which went on to win the UK Theatre Award for Excellence in Touring.
Over time, it became clear that I wanted to apply those skills, instincts and experience to my own writing. Small Talk exists to make the kind of work I care about: joyful, relevant and built on the foundation of small conversations that spark big ambition, with people invited into the process early and openly.
We developed that way of working on The Uncrackable Case, a musical I made with an incredible team and my co-creator, Olivia Race. Opening up rehearsals, experimenting and sharing ideas before they were fixed and listening carefully to artists and audiences helped shape stronger, more connected work. Working like that made the whole process unbelievably fun.
I used to think writing meant scurrying off to a room on your own, then sheepishly emerging days/ weeks/months later with the outcome. Something quite ego-dependent and something that never really appealed to me. The Uncrackable Case showed me something different: collaboration doesn’t dilute authorship, it deepens it.
Small Talk exists to make work in that spirit. We develop new writing in phases, letting people in from the start, building relationships as ideas grow and chasing what feels joyful.
